I had this problem. It turned out to be the motor coupling, but in a WEIRD way.
One end of it (the transmission end) was stripped almost clean of the indentation that makes it 'catch' on the transmission. Unpleasantly, the transmission shaft is also partly damaged, which must have contributed the the problem. Presumably, going on way (spinning), it still caught enough (being forced into that direction) to work, but on the agitate cycle, it just spun in air, stripping it some more. It certainly 'felt' like it was the transmission, but it's not. It's actually a $5 motor coupling.
